When he was eight years old, Bill Gates began reading his family’s set of World Book Encyclopedia. He had a great time and “determined to read straight through every volume”. Later he discovered the Encyclopedia Britannica and read much of it.
He loved reading the encyclopedias and learned a great deal from them. He realized later, however, that they had the limitation of being strictly alphabetical with related topics often scattered throughout the volumes. Modern CD-ROM encyclopedias, he argued, give the reader quick access to related topics in a way that a paper-based encyclopedia could never do.

我想，Bill Gates 阅读 World Book Encyclopedia（WBE） 的时候，肯定也有查阅 World Book Dictionary 。或许正是因为他儿时的这段经历，微软在上世纪八十年代末、九十年代初，试图和 World Book 合作，失败后转而推出 Encarta Encyclopedia 和 Encarta Dictionary ，不过遗憾的是在 2009 年，这条产品线已经被砍掉了，成为绝唱。参考： The Microsoft Way: The Real Story of how the Company Outsmarts Its Competition By Randall E. Stross 。

目前除了 Wikipedia + Wiktionary，尚有几部英文百科全书，可供在线订阅、查询，它们都配有相应的英语词典。

下面，主角上场。World Book Dictionary 中文名一般译作《世界图书词典》（和我国 1986 年，主业是版权贸易的“世界图书出版公司”没有任何关系），首版出版于 1963 年，和其他词典接着出第 2 版、第 3 版不同，WBD 是几乎年年更新，新印刷的版本，同时也更新内容。所以没有 WBD 第 2 版、第 n 版之说。我们来看看 1979 年版 WBD 的版权页。

通过这个版权页，我们也能获取很多信息，比如 WBD 最早名为 World Book Encyclopedia  Dictionary。

WBD 在线版仍在更新，查 netbook （上网本，2007 年前后才出现的新词）

WBD 是大师之作

词典也是人编的，不借助 Google ，您能说出几个词典编纂者的名字？您知道牛津、朗文、剑桥、麦克米伦、柯林斯、韦伯斯特词典历任主编都叫什么名字吗？当然，Webster 词典特殊一点，主编姓氏在词典名里都出现了，哈哈。

言归正传。WBD 主编叫 Clarence Barnhart （克拉伦斯·巴恩哈特），出生于二十世纪第一个年头 ——— 1900 年，WBD 于 1963 年问世，出版时，主编已经年逾花甲，不过，他再接再厉，又活了 30 年，延续了词典编纂家高寿的优良传统。在 WBD 出版前，他主编了下列词典：

• 1935 Thorndike-Century Junior Dictionary
• 1941 Thorndike-Century Senior Dictionary
• 1942 Thorndike-Century Junior Dictionary, Revised
• 1944 Dictionary of U.S. Army Terms (TM-20-205)
• 1945 Thorndike-Century Beginning Dictionary
• 1947 American College Dictionary[ACD]，基于 1927 年版 New Century Dictionary ，ACD 就是 Random House Dictionary of the English Language 的前身。
• 1954 New Century Cyclopedia of Names
  

注，前几部词典里的 Thorndike 是心理学家、教育心理学体系的创始人 Edward Thorndike （1874-1949），之前我有文章里提到的“马斯洛需求层次理论”，提出这个理论的“马斯洛”，就曾是 Thorndike 的助手。

Clarence Barnhart 早期编纂的词典，目标用户都是小盆友，从词表到释义，其理论基础都源于 Thorndike 的理论，适合学习。Thorndike-Barnhart Dictionary 已然是一个词典类别了，释义简明、清晰，适合学生使用。

虎父无犬子。某种意义上说， Barnhart 可是说是当代 Webster 。Noah Webster 的儿子参与了词典编纂，但是目前，他的后人似乎没有在从事词典编纂工作的。而 Barnhart ，则是真正的词典世家，祖孙三代，全在编词典，目前仍在继续。 儿子 Robert Barnhart 的名字和老爸一起，出现在了 WBD 的封面，他还编纂了一些有名的词典。

• Amerian Heritage Dictionary of Science
• The Barnhart Dictionary of Etymology ，在英国出版时叫 Chambers Dictionary of Etymology
  

Robert 的妻子 Cynthia 也是词典编纂家，2007 年出版了 The Facts On File Student’s Dictionary of American English 。
另一个儿子 David Barnhart 也著作颇丰，曾任 Dictionary Society of North America 主席。

Robert and Cynthia Barnhart and their five children — lexicographers all — toil much as Robert’s father, Clarence L. Barnhart, did: filling, filing and rifling through drawers and drawers of index cards that trace the evolution of American English.
Their Thorndike-Barnhart school dictionaries have long been classroom staples. There are also Barnharts’ New English, etymological, abbreviations and American Heritage Science dictionaries.

另，《21世纪大英汉词典》鸣谢名单里，出现了两个和主编“李华驹”很相似的名字，分别是李秀驹 、李龙驹。词典编纂是一个非常辛苦的工作，是离不开家人的支持的，向他们致敬。

WBD 是一本庞大的词典

纸质版一直是两卷，三千余页，重达五六斤，在所有尚在版的英英词典中，只有 OED、W3、RHUD 等极少数 Unabridged 词典比它大，不过“大而有当”，老少咸宜。

WBD 是一本低调的词典

去 International Journal of Lexicography 搜索 “World Book Dictionary” ，只有 5 条结果，最近一篇是 2007 年缅怀 Robert Barnhart 的文章。

Published in 1963, the WBD was acclaimed for its novel features, such as its clear and simple definitions, easy pronunciations, many illustrative sentences and phrases, and the clarity of its usage notes.

WBD 是综合性的词典，是实用性的词典，主要用户是母语为英语的学生，没有那么多学术方面的噱头，不被学术界尤其是英国占主导的英语词典编纂界重视也是理所当然的。

另，搜 Barnhart 也只有 46 条结果。

WBD 是一本和谐的词典

虽然缩写 WBD 在汉语中并不和谐，但是 WBD 是为小朋友准备的词典，所以它不收 f-word ，四字真经在 WBD 中是查不到的。

WBD 是一本友善的词典

下面开始说 WBD 的优点了。

WBD对英汉词典的影响

编纂英汉词典，无疑要参考英英词典。
上世纪 60 ~ 80 年代，《遠東英漢大辭典》《英汉大词典》《國際英漢大辭典》等编纂的时候，学习型词典不如现在丰富，没有计算机、互联网，World Book Dictionary 因为出版年代较早，释义用词简单、容易理解，收词、收义数量又远远超过一般的学习型词典，成为了英汉词典编纂最重要的参考，它们的很多词条，都可以找到 WBD 的影子。

WBD 成为编纂英汉词典的另一个原因是，它的释义是按照使用频率来排列的。比如查 camera ，OED、MWU 等基于历史原则的词典，靠前的释义不是“照相机”，而是“罗马教廷的财政部”或者更早、更生僻的释义，对于英语非母语的学习者甚至年轻的母语为英语的学生而言，使用起来很不方便，很让人困惑。

当然，直接翻译 WBD 的英汉词典，应该是没有。英汉词典编纂者肯定不会只参考一本英语词典，事实上，《英汉大词典》无论收词数量，部分词条的义项数量、例句数量，都是多于 WBD 的；《英汉大词典》的词源部分，和 WBD 倒是有相当程度的相似。

所以，我说 WBD 是一本适合小学生、中学生、大学生、终生学习者使用的母语词典。如果你

• 不想使用英汉词典，想尝试使用英英词典
• 但是又厌倦学习型词典那限定了释义用词，冗长、繁杂的释义
• 但是释义又不像 OED、W3 那样学究，力求简洁
• 释义按照当前使用频率排列，生僻义项靠后
• 觉得学习型词典收词量太小，想要收词、收义数量大
• 想要真实例句
• 想要短语丰富
• 想要了解词源
• 还有同义词
• 还有用法说明
• 美国英语词典
• ……
  那 WBD 欢迎您。
  如果非要挑刺，WBD 对于中国的英语学习者而言，可能有两个小问题。
• 音标不是国际音标，如我前面文章里所说，音标就那么几个符号，适应起来很快的，如果这一关都适应不了，那几个符号都记不住、念不出，那还怎么指望在单词的海洋里畅游？我个人不觉得音标会影响使用词典，音标用什么体系标注，在选择词典时，这恐怕是最不需要考虑的问题了。
• 没有音频，不过可以通过添加其他词典发音库来解决。
  

比较遗憾的是，WBD 出版于 1963 年，最早肯定不是电脑排版。后期电子版、网络版在电子化的过程中，估计由于人手、经费、时间原因，有一些来源不明的瑕疵、错误，不过，网友的力量是无穷的。在 mdx 世界中，WBD 的 mdx 制作，算是参与人次最多、版本最多的英英词典了，感谢编纂者，感谢 b＊＊＊＊＊，感谢所有参与制作、校对的朋友。

最后提一下，是“终生学习者”还是“终身学习者”，有问题，查词典啊。

现代汉语规范词典（第 3 版）

终身 zhōngshēn
①名 一辈子；一生。终身受益
②名 指婚姻大事。私订终身
用法说明 跟“终生”不同。“终身”强调直至生命结束，多指生活方面的事情，如“终身受益” “终身大事”；“终生”指一辈子，多指事业或工作，如“终生从教” “奋斗终生”。

要我选，我倾向于当“终生学习者”（lifelong learner）。
