in a shaky 2011 year, which saw the overall gaming industry sales drop 21%, Microsoft is celebrating. The Xbox 360 has been at the top of console sales for 12 months straight finishing 2011 as the best-selling current-generation console in the U.S. It has outsold the second-place console by more than 2.7 million units, according to The NPD Group.
The Xbox 360 became the fastest-growing console, capturing 49% of consumer retail spending. NPD reported that the Xbox 360 earned an industry-leading $6.7 billion in sales in the U.S. for the calendar year - more than $2.1 billion on consoles and $4.6 billion on games and accessories.
In December alone, sales on Xbox 360 products - consoles and accessories combined - totaled more than $1.5 billion, NPD data shows. That is the most for any console in the United States.
As noted in the report, for 2011, Xbox 360 had six of the top 10 console game titles including
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3,
Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Gears of War 3, Battlefield 3, Madden NFL 12,and
Call of Duty: Black Ops.
Microsoft revealed at CES 2012 this week that 66 million Xbox 360 consoles have been sold along with 18 million Kinect peripherals. Also
announced were launch details
of the Kinect Sensor for Windows PCs. Available on February 1, 2012 the Kinect for Windows sensor is priced at $240.
