Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has addressed the cause of Nintendo's sparse release schedule, blaming the company's focus on new hardware launches.

In a recent investor Q&A, he said, "The period when we needed to shift from the Nintendo DS to the Nintendo 3DS overlapped with the period when we had to prepare for the Wii U."

The Nintendo executive went on to explain that the simultaneous need to shift from DS and Wii to 3DS and Wii U proved to be a "challenge." Iwata noted that hardware shifts are normal in the industry, but that "these transitions are not fixed."

Nintendo's publishing schedule has been light for the bulk of the year so far, although the company has a Zelda game and multiple Mario games upcoming this year. Nevertheless, Wii and 3DS owners haven't had much to play lately.

Iwata noted that Nintendo is currently working on new games and is collaborating with third party partners to make sure it is not carrying all of the 3DS/Wii U development burden. "Rather than trying to do everything by ourselves, we must try to narrow down what we really have to do inside the company and think of how we can best collaborate with people from other companies," Iwata said.

The Nintendo president continued to elaborate, saying the company's mentality of doing everything on its own "has faded." Iwata said the possibility of having up to four active platforms means his teams "should focus on making new, unique and fun software while we collaborate with outside resources, especially in the fields for which Nintendo is not specialized in." Iwata specifically mentioned online gaming as an area where Nintendo is discussing the best development approach.

任天堂总裁岩田聪,指责公司把精力集中到新硬件的研发,任天堂公司周期作品匮乏。
在最近的投资者问&答中,他说:当我们把任天堂DS转移重心到3DS时期也正是我们必须准备WiiU的时期。
这个任天堂总裁接着解释道,同步把DS和Wii转移到3DS和WiiU上是一个“挑战”。岩田聪表示硬件平台的更替在业界很正常,但是这更替没有固定的(周期)。

任天堂早把作品周期表亮出来长达一年之久了,虽然今年底有塞尔达和几个马里奥游戏,除此之外购买Wii和3DS的玩家并没有其他多少游戏可玩。岩田聪表示任天堂最近还在忙着开发新游戏和协调第三方工作,确保任天堂不会承受所有的3DS/Wii U开发工作压力。“与其让我们干尽一切事情,倒不如去缩小我们公司内部活的规模,然后去想方设法协调其他人来自其他(第三方)公司。”岩田聪表示。

岩田聪接着详细述,以前在任天堂公司里自己承揽一切事物的想法已经“过时了”岩田聪说面对现在的四个平台上,要求我们要“集中精力制造新的有趣的软件,同时去协调利用外界的资源,特别是任天堂不擅长的领域”
岩田聪特别强调,在线游戏是任天堂经过讨论并认为最佳的发展领域和方向。
